Makerspace: 3D Laser Cutter

Glowforge

The Glowforge is a desktop 3D Laser Cutter capable of creating precision parts from draftboard (MDF) and thin Plywood. Glowforge uses a beam of light the width of a human hair to cut, engrave, and shape designs from a variety of materials. Participants in this course will design creations of their choice. They will start with a hand-drawn image using a sharpie or a printed clip art picture and their picture will be scanned into the Glowforge. The Glowforge will cut their design into draftwood and they can add color to it using colored sharpies. Once this project is completed we will show them how to use Adobe Illustrator to create a computer-generated design and have the Glowforge cut out their design.

Note: Due to the process scanning and laser cutting, students will come home with at least one project. If you would like to see the Glowforge in action, please visit: www.Glowforge.com.

Student Learning Targets:  Students will use technology to inform and improve their learning and to demonstrate their learning in a meaningful way.
