A family sits in the grass, picnic style, surrounded by other people

There's nothing like kicking off a school year in great style with exciting events leading up to it. That was exactly the case with the Walworth Jt. District #1 open house and community picnic at the school's playground field on  Aug. 30.

The event allowed people to meet teachers, find classrooms and get excited for the school year.

There was live music, a cookout (with brats, hot dogs, popcorn and lemonade), cotton candy, a bouncy house, a balloon artist, sports (volleyball and basketball, with former Walworth students), Walworth Police, Fire and Rescue Squad trucks and personnel, the bus company, and 30 staff experiences.

There were also representatives from various organizations, such as the History Committee, Children's Foundation, and the Boy Scouts. Also, Wesley the Wildcat made an appearance.

"We received a lot of positive feedback," said Caitlin Dowden, school principal. "Families, community members, students, staff, (school) board members...seemed to enjoy themselves and it was a great way to kick-start our school year."

Dowden expressed thanks to all who played a role in the success, from the planning to set-up to helping that night, as well as to those who attended the event.

"There were definitely a lot of activities going on that night," she added. "The open house and community picnic was an awesome way to kick-start our school year. It really set the tone for what is going to be a fabulous year!"
